FW 24/25 Denim: An Icon Evolves - COTERIE Brand Editorial

The Return of Wide Leg Jeans (And More Key Styles for FW 24/25)

Angela Velasquez, Rivet:

“Denim mills’ fabric collections for Fall/Winter 2024 were dense with green-cast indigo, black denim with color-lasting technology and ecru and earthy colors. Grunge-inspired overdyes and dirty washes, velvet-inspired flocking and leather-like coatings were also prominent, so anticipate these trends to trickle into brands’ F/W 24-25 denim collections."

“The straight fit gained momentum in 2023 but expect to see legs grow more relaxed in 2024. The vibe is cool ’90s boyfriend jean."

“Utility remains strong but brands are eliminating the bulk from cargo pockets. Brands are also modernizing low-rise jeans with looser legs and slouchier fits."

“Midi and maxi skirts updated with front or back slits, slim cargo pockets and asymmetrical hems give retailers something new to put on the sales floor."

“Contemporary denim can push crystal embellishments further for F/W 24-25.”

David Shelist, The Denim Lounge:

“Expect wider leg jeans in all lengths. I like that the rise is coming down a bit too, taking pressure off women who are self conscious with tighter fits. Long silhouettes look great for F/W 24-25.”

Jennifer Kim, AG Jeans:

“The looser fits continue to be popular. AG is introducing three new fits for Fall/Winter 24: the Adria, a low-rise wide leg, the Brinley, a new updated straight leg, and the Hattie, our barrel leg silhouette. We focused on pushing proportion and shape, while staying true to our classic, authentic washes. Each of these fits brings something new to our assortment and represent this fall’s key fashion bodies.”

"We always look forward to COTERIE, not just as an essential marketplace, but as a platform to present our seasonal collections to the industry."

The Evolution of Denim Fabrications

Angela Velasquez, Rivet:

“Brands in this market are investing in high-quality fabrics, which consumers recognize in the hand feel, fit and durability of garments. Mills are finding ways to make heavy-looking denim feel light, 100-percent cotton denim stretchy, and denim feel cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. There’s a secret science to denim that resonates with the premium customer. Awareness is also growing for organic cotton and regenerative cotton as well as recycled fibers and dyes.”

Consumer Shopping Habits are Changing

David Shelist, The Denim Lounge:

“Habits are changing. My customers are now coming in looking for ‘what would look good on me’. They don’t care about a specific style or name brand. They want something that will flatter them."

Angela Velasquez, Rivet:

“Consumers are becoming more adventurous with their denim. Jeans will always be a staple, but more consumers are building outfits around denim, especially as fits grow wider and looser. The fit of jeans determines the style of tops, outerwear and footwear women shop for more than ever before. Proportions are shifting and denim is driving that change.”
